I don't know if you'll ever get this comment since it seems to have been a while since you updated your blog, but I don't know how else to answer the question you posted on my blog.

The alternative to laser, that they used to use, has something to do with freezing the eye but the side-effects were worse and more extensive than with laser. Up until now, since they are starting to use the Avastin in an off-label manner, the laser has been the single standard option for treatment.

The Avastin is injected (usually only once) directly into the fluid in they eye. Since it blocks the growth of all blood vessels, though (thus why it works for fast-growing cancers that need more blood to survive), we just have to hope that high levels of the drug do not get out of the eye and into the rest of the bloodstream--especially since Brynn still desperately needs blood vessels to grow in the rest of her little body.

The doctor has used it for years with a lot of success in macular degeneration (sp?), but again, that's in older people who aren't actively growing new blood vessels outside of the eye.

He's not made any promises about the long term impact on Brynn or any other premature child for that matter.

PS Thanks for all your comments--and for being invested in my family's success! I love reading your input, especially since you are in the medical field!
